Al Amin Porosh left Bangladesh in 2015 after being persecuted, threatened, and physically harmed as a result of his political activism. By the time he was 16 years old, Al Amin had already been harmed twice and threatened by those in power as a result of participating in a student-winged political party to increase democratic processes in his community. In 2015, he was able to escape to Malaysia, where he provided for his elderly parents and 13 year old sister back in Bangladesh. However, due to the pandemic, Al Amin was unable to renew his work permit. Hoping to be able to remain safe and continue providing for his family, Al Amin sought safety in the United States. Today Al Amin is detained at Clay County IN Jail (ICE) after being transferred from McHenry County, Illinois as a result of detention closures in IL. He has been detained from the moment he entered the United States in April 2021.
Al Amin is a committed organizer and service worker, building strong relationships with advocate groups in Illinois. He has worked from a young age to advocate for participatory democracy in his home country, and has worked tirelessly to advocate for the rights of others here in the United States. While detained at McHenry County Jail, Al Amin cared for his colleagues and supported their needs, making calls on behalf of others and facilitating connections between those detained and outside advocacy groups. Due to his involvement and organizing Al Amin has built a strong community that has been supporting him and waiting for his release, including groups like the Interfaith Community for Detained Immigrants (ICDI) and Organized Communities Against Deportations (OCAD).
We ask that you help us demand Al Amin’s immediate release so that he may continue providing for his elderly parents, his younger sister, and be in connection with his community in Illinois!
