TW: mention of child abuse, domestic violence
Ana Navarro’s family migrated to the United States when Ana was just 2 years old. She didn’t know she was undocumented until she tried to sign up for an After School matters course in middle school.
Growing up on the Southeast side of Chicago, Ana suffered abuse from her stepfather starting at a young age, ultimately resulting in her removal from her mother’s custody for several years and the arrest of both her mother and step father. As a teenager, Ana became a caregiver for her three younger sisters, carrying the weight and responsibility to support and protect them like a parent.
When Ana was 19, she was forced to live with an older man who was physically and emotionally abusive and controlled her every movement. That abuse escalated, resulting in harm to her then two year old daughter. After reporting the abuse to the police, Ana was then criminalized and incarcerated, serving 15 years at Logan Correctional Center until November of 2022. During her time at Logan, Ana contributed to her community in every way she could and worked hard to process and heal from her trauma through counseling and courses through the Women of Hope program.
Ana is immensely talented as an artist and cook; at Logan, she took it upon herself to paint the visitor’s room to make it a friendlier, more inviting space for children visiting their parents, and she also graduated cum laude from a horticulture course, with dreams of building a bee sanctuary and urban farm upon her release.
Post-incarceration, Ana has continued to work with her community and advocate for system-impacted women. Prior to her detention, she was a coach to system-impacted women through the W.I.N.D program and was selected as a 2023 Policy Fellow with the Women’s Justice Institute.
Now Ana is in danger of being deported by ICE and ripped away from her community and siblings. Please join us in demanding that ICE free Ana!
